In November 2024, four lovely journalists and I headed onto the long flight to Victoria Falls for a trip to Zimbabwe that was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we arrived, everything was seamlessly organised, starting with a smooth transfer from the airport to the Victoria Falls Safari Club. During our hotel tour, we looked out the window and spotted the first elephant lumbering slowly towards the watering hole that sits in front of the hotel. After an 18 hour overnight flight, this magical sight woke us up immediately!
Of course, a visit to Victoria Falls itself was a highlight. A guided tour took us up close to Mosi Oa Tunya (the local name for the falls), and we learnt about the history of the area and watched the daredevils in Devils Pool across the border in Zambia. After the tour, we relaxed at the Victoria Falls Safari Spa before heading out for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, spotting hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and more elephants with cocktails in our hands and canapes being brought to us as we watched the sunset.
The morning game drive was an unforgettable experience. For the first two hours, we hadn’t seen much wildlife except a few zebras, but just as we were about to leave the national park, we were surrounded by a herd of over 100 elephants! It was a jaw dropping sight, with mothers and babies moving gracefully around us. We were all dumbstruck, and even our guide said that he’d never had that experience before.
Evenings were filled with cultural experiences and more wildlife spotting. One of our favorite dinners was at The Boma, where we enjoyed delicious local dishes while watching an entertaining Dinner & Drum Show, complete with traditional music and dancing. The watering hole in front of the hotel is lit by floodlights at night, meaning that when a thirsty herd of elephants stop by during dinner, guests are in prime location to marvel through binoculars even after the sun has gone down.
The food (specifically the sea bream and the bloody mary station at breakfast) at Victoria Falls Safari Club, and the hospitality were unmatched. I can’t wait to go back.
